If you are reading this then you will either know somebody who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, or you are afraid that somebody close to you is showing stages of dementia orAlzheimer's, or you may just be seeing some tell tale signs in a family member or a friend.

Either way you will probably have some knowledge about this awful condition. I am not going to sit here and tell you how bad things are, how difficult it is to care for alzheimer's patients, and how much worse they could get, simply because you may already be aware of this, and listening to me saying things like; what a terrible effect alzheimers can be on all the people that are involved in that type of situation is not really going to be any help whatsoever.
The first thing that you will probably have been told is that there is no real cure for alzheimers, although alzheimer's disease research is on the increase. The disease can be slowed down, or controlled by the use of certain drugs. The drawback of using drugs is that they all have side effects. Sometimes these side effects can occur pretty quickly, other times they can appear after months or even a few years. It's a question of balancing the risk against the benefits.
Another thing that should be part of your alzheimer's disease awareness, is that it has been on the increase for a number of years and shows no sign of slowing down. More and more people in the western world are developing alzheimers along with other types of dementia. In non western countries this disease is nowhere near as common. What you have to realise is that things don't just change without a reason. There is a cause and there is an effect. Clearly something is happening that is behind the causes of alzheimer's. However we have not yet discovered the causes of alzheimer's.
Too be honest, we still do not know a lot about this disease, and because of this, and because of the alarming increases in people suffering from alzheimers, a lot of research and studies are being carried out. There has not been any definitive outcome in all the alzheimer's disease research that has been carried out, but there is one thing that consistently crops up again and again, and that is "diet".

A study conducted in 1999 revealed that eating dark colored vegetables and fruit could help slow down the effects of brain function decline. One of the best and most effective fruits to eat was blueberries to help combat the stages of dementia.
A study which was reported in the highly acclaimed Journal of The American Medical Association, states that foods which contain high levels of vitamin E, such as nuts, cereals, green leafy vegetables, and vegetable oils, could help prevent some people from developing alzheimers and other types of dementia. However Vitamin E in supplement form was not nearly effective as Vitamin E which came from real food.
Another large study which was carried out 2002, and the results were reported at the International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease, stated that who consumed fruits, vegetables, fish, and lean meats on a regular basis in their middle age, had a far lower risk of developing alzheimer's disease in later life. The risk was increased in people who ate a diet which consisted of red meat and foods high in unhealthy fats and sugar.
A study published in the Archives of Neurology in 2006 states that having a diet which contains regular consumption of oily fish could lower the risk of alzheimers.
Although the issue of diet in regards to alzheimers disease crops up again and again, it is rarely reported in the media, as something that has any real relevance. Why do you think this happens?
Pharmaceutical companies are extremely powerful and have huge financial resources. It is not in their interests for people to be cured of anything. They make their money by selling drugs, in order for them to keep making money, they need people to continue using the drugs that they produce. Controlling alzheimers is always going to be more profitable than finding a cure for alzheimer's.
Regardless how often the issues of diet crop up in alzheimers disease research or studies, when someone goes to a doctor about alzheimers, how often will that person be told to change to a healthier diet and forget the medication for the time being? The primary focus is on drugs. A person may be issued with a particular drug which may not work. So then other drugs are also tried, and then others. All these chemicals pushed into a persons body can have significant risks. Care for an alzheimer's patient may come in various ways
All drugs take their toll on our bodies, simply because they are not natural solutions. Our bodies are natural entities, and they will react to whatever we are putting into our bodies. It doesn't matter whether the reaction is positive or negative, the point is that there will be a reaction.
